Australia-Singapore Joint Issue 1998

Australia - Singapore Joint Issue Four native orchid species are depicted on the joint stamp issue between the Commonwealth of Australia and the Republic of Singapore. Phalaenopsis rosenstromii F M Bailey, endemic to north-eastern Australia, inhabits pockets of rainforest from about Mount Spec, north of Townsville, to the Iron Ranges, Cape York Peninsula. A native of Singapore, Arundina graminifolia (D Don) Hochr. is one of the most widespread orchid species in south-east Asia. Grammatophylhan speciosum Blume, commonly called the Tiger Orchid, occurs in lowland rainforest throughout the Malay archipelago. The Cooktown Orchid (Dendrobium phalaenopsis Fitzg.), the State floral emblem of Queensland, occurs between Mount Malloy and the Archer River in Cape York Peninsula. This stamp issue coincides with the 6th Asia Pacific Orchid Conference, held between 8 and 15 September 1998 in Townsville, Queensland.
