Australia 1989 : Australian's Historic Tramways FDC

Australia's Historic Tramways

Australian historic trams recall a more leisurely era when pedestrians rather than motor cars filled city streets. Indeed, the first trams were powered by horses and competed only with the occasional Hansom cab for road space. In the 1880s different types of traction were developed which allowed each tram to carry more passengers. Steam power was adopted as the basis of Sydney's early tram network, while Melbourne opted for a cable system. Eventually, however, electricity replaced all other forms of traction.
