Australia 1983 : Historic Fire Engines FDC

HISTORIC FIRE ENGINES

The Historic Fire Engines stamp issue honours the work and dedication of Australia's fire fighting services, both past and present.

Four historic engines are illustrated.

An 1891 Shand Mason Steam Fire Engine once used by the Sydney Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The steam powered pump unit was originally horse-drawn, but later converted for towing behind a truck.

A 1914 Hotchkiss Fire Engine, one of the many converted from French Hotchkiss touring cars by the Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade.

A 1929 Abremr-Fox PS2 Fire Engine with front-mounted pump and distinctive spherical pressure equaliser, used by the New South Wales Fire Brigade.

An 1851 Merryweatber Manual Fire Engine donated by Sir William and Lady Don to fight fires in the central Victorian gold-rush town of Scandinavian Crescent (later renamed Talbot).
