LANDCARE
The aim of the Decade of Landcare is to achieve sustainable land use by the year 2000. Traditional land use systems and past mistakes, such as excessive clearing, heavy grazing and intensive agriculture, have degraded the land, rendering it less productive. Throughout the country landcare groups are forming to tackle degradation problems such as soil salination, erosion and soil structure decline, to promote conservation farming practices and to plan better land management systems. A national landcare ethic is required to ensure that the basic resources of soil and water are available for future generations.
