Australia 2001 : Commonwealth of Australia FDC

CENTENARY OF FEDERATION 1901-2001

On 1 January 1901 six separate colonies federated to become the Commonwealth of Australia. Serious attempts to introduce a federation began in the 1890s with a series of national conventions. Approval for a federated system was finally achieved when all colonies voted by referenda for a new constitution and an Act was passed through the British parliament. The inauguration of the Commonwealth on 1 January 1901 was celebrated across the new nation. In Sydney a grand procession culminated in the proclamation of the Commonwealth and the swearing in of the new ministry in a ceremony in Centennial Park. The inauguration was followed by days of celebrations.
