Australia 2013 : Merry Christmas Island FDC

The Christmas Island Christmas stamp issue takes a colourful approach to its subject. The illustrations use local fauna to link Christmas to the island named by Captain William Mynors, who sailed past it on 25 December 1643. Santa rides on the back of a Frigatebird, a banner announcing tidings of the festive season. Meanwhile, a Frigatebird and a Red Crab ferry a payload of presents in a hot-air balloon, with Christmas Island far below in the shimmering blue waters of the Indian Ocean.

Australia 1992 : Landcare FDC

LANDCARE

The aim of the Decade of Landcare is to achieve sustainable land use by the year 2000. Traditional land use systems and past mistakes, such as excessive clearing, heavy grazing and intensive agriculture, have degraded the land, rendering it less productive. Throughout the country landcare groups are forming to tackle degradation problems such as soil salination, erosion and soil structure decline, to promote conservation farming practices and to plan better land management systems. A national landcare ethic is required to ensure that the basic resources of soil and water are available for future generations.

Australia 2008 : 100 Years of Quarantine FDC

The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) has a long history. In March 1908 the Commonwealth Government of Australia passed the Quarantine Act to protect Australians' health from contagious diseases, and the country's industries from overseas pests and animals.

With Australia's primary industries contributing billions of dollars to the Australian economy, quarantine matters as much as it ever did. So, when you next see an AQIS beagle at the airport, it is worth remembering that he is the most visible sign of a long history of preventing the introduction of destructive pests that threaten Australia's flora and fauna, and primary industries.

On 1 January 1901 six separate colonies federated to become the Commonwealth of Australia. Serious attempts to introduce a federation began in the 1890s with a series of national conventions. Approval for a federated system was finally achieved when all colonies voted by referenda for a new constitution and an Act was passed through the British parliament. The inauguration of the Commonwealth on 1 January 1901 was celebrated across the new nation. In Sydney a grand procession culminated in the proclamation of the Commonwealth and the swearing in of the new ministry in a ceremony in Centennial Park. Australia 1990 : Boomtime FDC

BOOMTIME

Auctioneers, architects, builders, stock-brokers, retailers and factory owners had a field-day during the 1870s and 1880s. Wealth from land sales, primary industries and mining discoveries encouraged even further speculation, construction and development. The period gave Australia characteristic buildings now valued for their bold Victorian style. Many suburbs, not settled until well into the next century, were subdivided at this time and a thriving manufacturing industry was developed.

Australia 1989 : Australian's Historic Tramways FDC

Australia's Historic Tramways

Australian historic trams recall a more leisurely era when pedestrians rather than motor cars filled city streets. Indeed, the first trams were powered by horses and competed only with the occasional Hansom cab for road space. In the 1880s different types of traction were developed which allowed each tram to carry more passengers. Steam power was adopted as the basis of Sydney's early tram network, while Melbourne opted for a cable system. Eventually, however, electricity replaced all other forms of traction.

Australia 2007 : Caravanning through the Years FDC

Caravans first appeared in Australia during the 1920s, but the real craze for the "home-away-from-home" holiday struck in the 1950s, when greater prosperity, better roads and wider access to cars enabled this leisure pursuit. Caravans offered holidaymakers a sense of freedom and unshackled them from the constraints of railway schedules and destinations. This stamp issue celebrates the great Australian holiday, with a rearview-mirror look at caravanning from the 1950s to today's mobile generation of grey nomads.

Australia 2012 : Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee 2012 FDC

Royal jubilees celebrate significant periods in both a nation's life and a monarch's reign. In 2012 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 celebrates her Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years as sovereign. Celebratory activities will take place in the United Kingdom and across the Commonwealth throughout Sender's name and address the year, with the highlight being an extended weekend in the United Kingdom, from 2 to 5 June 2012. The only other British monarch to celebrate a diamond jubilee was Queen Victoria, in 1897.

The Queen came to the throne on 6 February 1952 following the death of her father, King George VI. She was only 25 years old. Her coronation took place more than a year later, on 2 June 1953. The Queen has stood as a unifying figure in both the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, despite the enormous social changes that have taken place since her coronation. Throughout her reign, the Queen has been loyally supported by the Duke of Edinburgh, her husband of 65 years.

Australia 1990 : Animals of the High Country FDC

Animals of the High Country Like many parts of wild Australia, the alpine and sub-alpine country is in danger from human carelessness. Each of the four marsupials depicted from this region, the Greater Glider, Mountain Pygmy-possum, Spotted-tailed Quoll and Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby, depend for survival on the conservation of the tenuous ecological balance of their environment.

Cover: Broad-toothed Rat Mastacomys fuscus.

Australia 2009 : Australian Songbirds FDC

Songbirds are strongly represented in Australia's avifauna. The cleft palate and complexly structured and muscled voice box are among the songbird's distinguishing features, the latter having developed in a manner that allows it to make various "sound notes,"which are commonly known as bird song. This beautifully illustrated stamp issue features the Green Catbird (Ailuroedus crassirostris), Noisy Scrub-bird (Atrichornis clamosus), Mangrove Golden Whistler (Pachycephala melanura) and Scarlet Honeyeater (Myzomela sanguinolenta). These species illustrate some of the diversity of the Passeriformes order, in morphology and behaviour as well as in the different areas and habitats of mainland Australia that they occupy.
