PENANG FREE SCHOOL 200 YEARS ANNIVERSARY
Between 1805 and 1816 education was available only for Caucasian children and children of Government Officials. The increasing number of Asian children, however, resulted in an increasing demand to provide for education for the latter.
On 6th of February 1816, a committee hearted by Reverend Robert Sparke Hutchings, then the Colonial Chaplain of the Prince of Wales Island, submitted a proposal for the establishment of a school to the Governor of Penang.
This resulted in the establishment of the Penang Free School on 21st of October 1816,. The school is open to all children regardless of race or religion. Hence, its name, Penang Free School. The original aim was to provide a school for the orphans and poor children. They were to be educated, fed and clothed. Since they were to be so completely taken care of, Reverend Hutchings suggested that Penang Free should be a boarding school that also accommodates day-school children. The day-school children were to be taught in their own language by "nation teachers," and English would be taught to them only if they were to desire it. Plan for a girls' school teas also included in the petition using the same basis. Penang Free School is the oldest English School in Malaysia and South East Asia. Its first headmaster was Mr James Cox (1816-1821.) In 1928, the school moved to its current location on Jalan Masjid Negeri (better known as Green Lane). The School received the Cluster School Status from the Education Ministry of Malaysia in 2007.
Excerpts of the original charter:
"That it will be the first object of the Institution to provide for the Education of such children as would be otherwise, brought up in idleness and consequent vice, and without any means of obtaining instruction either in useful learning or in any manual employment, and to implant in them in the early habits of industry, order and a good conduct."
from "The Original Plan of the Establishment of Prince of Wales Island, Free School,
After 1821, there was a series of relatively unqualified British School Masters until 1891 when William Hargreaves, a Master of Arts degree holder, arrived. During his Headmastership, the Penang Free School achieved academic honours such as students winning the coveted Queen's Scholarships a multiple number of times. His successor, Ralph Henry Pinhorn, brought the academic standards to an even greater height.
In 1896, construction began on the eastern-half of a new double-storey Penang Free School building in Farquhar Street. It was ten years later that the other half was completed.
In 1909, the Penang Free School introduced the first school magazine to the Straits Settlements and British Malaya. The first Old Frees' Association was formed in Penang in 1923, followed by the Kuala Lumpur & Selangor chapters in 1959 and Singapore chapter in 1962. In 1924, the Government allocated 30 acres of land in Green Lane for a new school building. After the Penang Free School re-located there in January 1928, the old building was renamed as Hutchings' School. Today, this building is used by the Penang State Museum.
The school's last European Headmaster left in 1963 and since then, Malaysians have filled the eminent position. Other significant developments over the last 50 years have included the Sesquicentenary celebrations in ,1966, the setting up of the Yayasan Penang Free School in 1996 and the School being accorded the Cluster School status in-2007. 1816".
