Australia 1994 : Commemorating The Resumption Of Cocos (Keeling) Islands FDC

COMMEMORATING THE RESUMPTION OF COCOS (KEELING) ISLANDS ISSUES BY AUSTRALIA POST

Cocos (Keeling) Islands is a Territory of Australia located some 2770 km north-west of Perth in the Indian Ocean, and about 850 km west of Christmas Island. From 1 January 1994 Australia Post will provide postal services on the Islands. All Cocos (Keeling) Islands stamps issued after that date are valid for postage throughout Australia, and Australian stamps are valid for use on Cocos. To mark the resumption of the issue of Cocos (Keeling) Islands stamps by Australia Post, a sheetlet of 5c,10c, 20c and 45c stamps shows a map of the main South Keeling Islands, interspersed with Reef Triggerfish, Green Turtles, Pyramid Butterflyfish and jukongs, the traditonal sailing-boats of the Cocos Malay people. The map does not show North Keeling Island, which is located 24 km north of the southern atoll.
