Malaysia 2016 : Posmen Komuniti FDC

POSMEN KOMUNITI

Posmen Komuniti is one of the projects under the Pelan Transformasi Pos Sabah Sarawak (PTPSS) with the objective to widen mail coverage and improve delivery services in the rural areas. This initiative is a joint collaboration between Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (KKMM), Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Pos Malaysia.

Since its inception in 2010, there are currently 450 Posmen Komuniti in Sabah and Sarawak helping to deliver postal items from house to house in the rural areas where normal postmen could not get to. The Posmen Komuniti are mainly the locals in the area, appointed to serve as agents to deliver postal products to their community, as well as to accept postal items for delivery.

The Posmen Komuniti delivers and manages their daily tasks by using different means of transportation. Depending on their unique surroundings and logistical challenges, some of them ride on horses, bicycles or long boats/sampan, and some by walking and using motorcycles or cars.

Delivering postal items on horseback is very unique and can only be found in the district of Kota Belud, Sabah. This special way to deliver mail has received recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records on 26 March 2016 as the "First Community Horseback Postmen" in Malaysia.

Posmen Komuniti menggunakan bot panjang/sampan • Posmen Komuniti by long boat/sampan

In some rural areas in Sarawak, long boats/sampan are used by the Posmen Komuniti to deliver postal items. These are mainly areas where the river is used as the main channel to reach locations where roads are still not available from the nearest town.

Posmen Komuniti menggunakan basikal • Posmen Komuniti by bicycle

Malaysia is a multiracial country with various races and ethnicities residing together whilst practicing their individual beliefs and religion. This spirit of togetherness and multiculturalism-is even more obvious in Sabah and Sarawak with at least 60 different ethnics living together in the region.

The selection and appointment of Posmen Komuniti also considers -the various races and ethnicities in Sabah and :Sarawak where, these Posmen Komuniti are those who are well-known in their respective local community and are familiar with the locals/villagers of their area. This is a plus point for the Posmen Komuniti as it would help them in delivering the letters or parcels to the receiver with ease. There are also times when the Posmen Komuniti deliver the letters or parcels at places where the locals would usually gather and meet up such as the community hall, local cafeterias, the head of villagers' house, etc.

With the availability of postal service in the rural areas, it will help the locals to be more active and involve in doing business at the same time improving the well-being and standard of living in these areas.
