2008 marks the 100th birthday of Rugby League-Australia's First professional football code. It was established in response to growing discontent amongst players over their treatment and a tour by the New Zealand professional "all Golds" team led by Albert Baskerville. The new game got off to a flying start and has not looked back since. In its centenary year, Rugby League is undoubtedly one of the most popular competitions in the country, whose boundaries continue to widen, with the National Rugby League Competition now comprising 16 teams from various states and New Zealand.
