The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world, consisting of more than 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands extending about 2,600 kilometers (1,600 mi) in an area of around 344,400 square kilometers (133,000 sq mi). The reef sits in the Coral Sea, off the Queensland coast of northeastern Australia.The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from the ground, which is the largest single structure created by living creatures in the world.
