Australia 2002: Champions of the Turf FDC

Wakeful (b.1896), one of Australia's greatest mares, was unplaced in only three of her 44 starts. She carried huge weights to victory and become public idol. Rising Fast (b.1949), big, robust and immensely powerful, took out the Caulfield Cup, the W S Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup in 1954, the only horse racing history to win the treble in the same year. Manikato (b.1975) was a champion racehorse for five years. A powerhouse galloper, he dominated the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley and the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield. Might and Power (b.1993), often compared with champions such as Tulloch and Kingdom Town, won the Caulfield -Melbourne Cup double in 1997. Sunline (b.1995) is today's champion. A big, strong mare from New Zealand, Sunline's career highlights include back-to-back W S Cox Plate victories (1999 and 2000). She began 2002 in sparkling form, winning the Doncaster Handicap at Randwick for a second time.
