Malaysia 2019 : 150 Tahun Setem Sarawak FDC

Setem Pertama Sarawak, 1869 / The story of the first stamp of Sarawak, 1869
Oleh/By: Dr Ong Liap Teck

2019 marks the 150th anniversary of the issuance of the first stamp of Sarawak on 1 March 1869. Before 1869, letters from Sarawak bearing no stamps and from 1850s till 1867, Indian stamps issued by the East India Company based in India were used in Sarawak in accordance with the postal arrangement between Sarawak and the Straits Settlements (Forrester-wood, 1959). In 1867, the Straits Settlement began to issue her own stamps by overprinting the East Indian stamps with a Crown and the new denominations in cents. Sarawak followed suit. As early as 1868, design was made for the issuance of the first stamp of Sarawak. On 12 January 1869, Sir Charles Brooke, the Second Rajah of Sarawak decided that Sarawak should issue her own stamps. The printer was Maclure, Macdonald & Macgregor and the method of production was lithographic press. Interestingly, the first Sarawak stamp was only valid as far as Singapore and only within Sarawak. Additional stamps from Strait Settlements had to be added for destinations beyond Singapore.
