Australia 1999 : International Year of Older Person FDC

International Year of Older Persons 1999

The United Nations has designated 1999 the International Year of Older Persons.

Australia has adopted 'Australia - towards a society of all ages' as the overall theme for the International Year. The theme recognises the importance of fostering intergenerational activities and understanding to create a balance between tradition and innovation in economic, social and cultural development.

Australia's population is ageing and it is ageing relatively quickly. The proportion of Australians aged over 65 years will grow in the next two decades from 12 to 16 per cent, an increase from 2.2 million in 1996 to about 3.5 million by 2016. The majority of older Australians are healthy and active.

The International Year provides a unique opportunity for all Australians to recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution older people make to the nation, to communities, and to families.
