Australia 1986 : New South Wales The Decision to Settle FDC

In 1786 the British government determined to establish a penal colony in New South Wales, the land discovered by James Cook in 1770. King George III and Lord Sydney were among the decision-makers; Captains Arthur Phillip and John Hunter were charged with overseeing the first fleet of convict ships. Visible in the background of the stamps are the two groups most affected by the decision — the convicts themselves, and the Aboriginal inhabitants of New South Wales.
