Australia 1983 : Explorers of Australia FDC

EXPLORERS OF AUSTRALIA

The great inland expeditions of the mid-nineteenth century explored much of Australia's unknown interior. Burke and Wills crossed the continent from south to north; both died on the return journey. Sir Paul Strzelecki traversed the alpine region; discovering and naming Mt Kosciusko, Australia's highest peak. Alexander Forrest explored the remote Kimberley district of Western Australia. Ludwig Leichhardt trekked three thousand miles from Queensland's Darling Downs to Port Essington on the north coast; he later disappeared without trace, attempting to cross the continent from east to west.
